It's nearing the end of another summer, and it's about time I asked myself this important question:
Have I improved over the past year?My life as a dancer started at around this time two years ago, when I enrolled myself to a 12-session breakdance class in Vibe Dance Studio's summer dance workshop. That time, I was faced with opposition from both of my parents - my dad claiming that "it is time to work and not to learn something new" and my mom telling me to heed dad's warning.
I really wanted this from the bottom of my heart, so I withdrew my earnings from my previous job and secretly enrolled myself one day, only to find out two years later that dance had become an irreplaceable part of my everyday life.
At the end of each year's workshop, we hold a special performance night showcasing dance acts and the things that we had learned during our stay. As a regular student, the recital was some sort of a hurdle for me. It was my way of proving to people, to my friends, to my parents, and most importantly, to myself that
it's never too late to do the things you want, no matter how impossible the situation might be!
So, have I improved at all?
2010 - As a newbie in both bboy and gymnastics, I planned to incorporate a handstand forward roll into my solo routine. It wasn't perfect, but I managed to do it without hurting myself on the hard floor much. When I look back at the video, my movements seem very awkward and stiff.
2011 - The challenge for last year was to do a back handspring (backflip with hands touching the ground) immediately after doing a back roll. I was shaking in fear, worrying that I might not succeed even after weeks of courage building and practice. In the end, it became a back headspring (I landed on my head >.<). But it looked intentional so I guess that's fine.
2012 - This year, I want to raise it up a notch. I'm doing 5 flips in my bboy set (I'm performing in 4 different dances, but I'm doing all 5 flips in just one of them). 2 back handsprings, 1 forward handspring, 1 monkey flip (sort of like a back handspring done while sitting down), and 1 backtuck (backflip without hands). I thought the backtuck would be the most troublesome, but the monkey flip proved to be a lot more difficult than I had expected. I'm trying to get everything mastered this week.
We'll be at the St. Paul QC Theater on June 2, 7:30 in the evening. Please support me and all the other performances!

Meanwhile, #
inkjinks would be at the Summer Komikon 2012 this May 26, 2012 at the Bayanihan Center, Unilab, Pioneer Street, Pasig City!

I'd love to join, but looking at my schedule, especially for this week, I'm not sure if I could make it.
Either way, thank you for supporting us and our products!
